Demantoid garnet belongs to the Andradite Group of garnets and it's green
color range is the most valuable. It has a very high refractive index
surpassing sapphire, and it has a higher dispersion than diamond. It's
luster rivals diamond from which it's name is derived. The demantoid garnet
from Russia can be recognized by the characteristic "horsetails" which are
fine hairlike inclusions of asbestos. The Namibian demantoid does not have
those inclusions and tends to be more flawless. Namibian demantoid was
first discovered in 1996 by a goatherder who showed the crystals around and
when he caught the attention of experts-they quickly realized what a
treasure he found.
The stones displayed in our inventory have a story of personal pleasure and
adventure, as the rough was brought back from a trip to Namibia by Jerry
Newman. He faceted the larger oval and had the balance faceted by an
associate with ties to a trusted Sri Lankan cutter.
These green garnets could easily be mistaken for green diamonds.
