The raw material for this gem came from the zinc smelter in Silesia, Poland close to 20 years ago when they knocked down the chimney at the smelter during renovations. Naturally occurring zincite is very rare with small crystals occurring in several worldwide locations. It is a soft material(Mohs 4 to 4.5), but has exceptional optical properties with a refractive index over 2.0 with medium to strong dispersion. The photo does not come close. Even in low light some of the lower facets seem to have a light of their own. This stone really sparkles all over. Obviously because of the relatively low hardness, it would not be a good ring stone.
The pattern is a Hexbar Oval with 63 facets.
